The EAT-Lancet recommendations encourage a largely plant-based diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, pulses and plant oils, with very modest amounts of animal protein – and in particular, it encourages a reduction in red meat (amounting to a small portion no more than 2-3 times a month).

The EAT-Lancet report brings together the research of 30 leading scientists in a consensus that advocates for a ‘planetary health diet’ in order to improve global health and mitigate climate change. The diet entails “substantial shifts toward mostly plant-based dietary patterns

One of the report’s main, highly controversial recommendations, was that red meat consumption would have to be cut by 80% to save the planet from climate change. The EAT–Lancet report also specifies which food groups might be substituted for each other, based on their nutritional content and environmental effect. For example, poultry is exchangeable with fish and eggs, and various plant-based protein sources are interchangeable.

The EAT Lancet report report is the first of its kind that quantifies, at a global level, how large a conversion is needed for the food system to be both good for human health and sustainable for the planet. The report deals with a variety of topics, such as health, diet, climate, environment, fishing and agriculture. Because the EAT–Lancet report covered the breadth of human diets, we could not cite the thousands of primary reports on all aspects of diet and all health outcomes, so we relied heavily on and cited nearly a hundred systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and pooled analyses of primary data, the full list of which can be seen in the appendix of the report.
